HISTORY OF MAGDALENA MARIA GABRIEL & CO.
Established by Polish artist Magdalena Maria Gabriel, MMG Collective is an ensemble of some of Europe’s most talented and masterful creatives. Hand-picked by Gabriel, these are a group of high grade specialist artists, artisans, master craftspeople and designers, that have deeply researched and investigated the aesthetic and astute technical dimensions of the 18th, 19th and early 20th century watch-making masters. Magdalena Maria Gabriel who held a lifelong love of fine art, worked with Claude Koening & Rungwe Kingdon at their world renowned Pangolin Editions Foundry, one of the last few sculpture foundries still practicing the traditional heritage skills of lost block investment casting. She had the opportunity to train in these traditional skills and also got involved in understanding the intricacies of the sand molding process.
Damien Hirst, one of the most successful contemporary artists of our times, and creator of the iconic diamond skull For the Love of God – a platinum cast of a human skull entirely encrusted with over 8,600 flawless diamonds, including a rare pink diamond set in its forehead, a work that has become one of the most prestigious and provocative symbols of contemporary art and luxury.
Following this highly regarded training, Gabriel had the opportunity to collaborate on a project with Damien Hirst, one of the world’s foremost and highest valued living artists, Renowned for his provocative exploration of themes like life, death, and beauty, Hirst made history with his record-breaking £111 million auction, Beautiful Inside My Head Forever, which redefined the global art market. Magdalena played a pivotal role in creation of key sculptures showcased in Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable by modelling for them, it was Hirst’s most ambitious project, which was nearly a decade in the making. Commissioned by global magnate and French billionaire – François Pinault, founder of the Kering Group (parent company of Gucci, Saint Laurent, and Balenciaga), the project was held at Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana in Venice. It redefined the boundaries between art, commerce, and storytelling. Pinault, a global leader in luxury and contemporary art patronage, leveraged his Venetian museums to serve as iconic hubs for cutting-edge artistic expression. Additionally Magdalena had an opportunity to work at the artist’s studio in Staud, Gloucestershire. The workshop setup by Damien Hirst was displaying the creative process of making “Spin Paintings” with the opportunity of partaking in the process. She had the chance to create two spin paintings with the assistance of Damien Hirst.
After her departure from London, Gabriel moved to the South of France, to explore a deeper resonance with colour and light. Living in this region, where the likes of Picasso, Bacon and Van Gough once did, Magdalena was inspired by the essence of this bohemian yet luxuriant enclave of the world. Here while living in Monaco, she added to her exploration and lexicon of the finest materials and quality espoused, to go on and create her art works in a rich and decadent display of precision juxtaposed with the joyous good life. Works from the MMG Collective’s private collection found a home at the Musée Collection des Arts, owned by David Iakobashvili, a distinguished entrepreneur and collector. The museum is also known for one of the world’s foremost collections of vintage pocket watches. While being there some artworks from the MMG Collective’s private collection have been acquired by the Musée Collection des Arts permanently. Its holdings later contributed to Monaco & the Napoleons: Intertwined Destinies at the Grimaldi Forum, held under the High Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II and developed in collaboration with the Archives & Library of the Palais Princier de Monaco, with Louis Ducruet serving as project ambassador. Magdalena is a young patron of the Tate Modern and the Victoria & Albert Museum, council member of National Geographic Society, and has been a member of the Future Contemporaries committee of the Serpentine Galleries, a globally leading contemporary art institution chaired by Michael Bloomberg, since 2014.
